ACCESS TO JUSTICE UPDATE  October 20, 2015

NEXT COMMISSION MEETING October 26. 3:00,

The next meeting of the Access to Justice Commission will take place at 3:00 pm on Monday, October 26, 2015, beginning at 3:00 pm . The meeting is open to the public. All are welcome. On the agenda: continued discussion of the role of social service agencies in access to justice, the plans of the Access to Attorneys Committee (incubators, fee-shifting, etc.),  and an update on proposed expansion of the jurisdictionof the Housing Court.

Future meetings of the Commission are scheduled for November 16, January 28, March 21 and May 19.

ACCESS TO JUSTICE EVENTS FOR YOUR CALENDAR

TODAY (OCTOBER 20): Chief Justice Ralph D. Gants (former Chair of the Access to Justice Commission) delivers his annual “State of the Judiciary” report at the Massachusetts Bar Association Bench-Bar Symposium. The program starts at 4:00 in the Great Hall of the Adams Courthouse in Boston. Also speaking will be Trial Court Chief Judge Paula M. Carey, Trial Court Administrator Harry Spence and MBA President Robert W. Hernais.

Wednesday, October 21: Community Lawyering to Seize the Power of Public Participation.  Richard Marcantonio and Sam Tepperman-Gelfant of Public Advocates discuss their experiences with two coommunities. 1:00 to 1:30 pm EDT. Wednesday, October 28, Fifth Annual Massachusetts Medical-Legal Partnership Conference “Social Determinants of Health: Emerging Strategies for an Evolving Healthcare System.”   Registration 8:15 am; Conference begins at 9:00 am., Federal Reserve Bank of Boston . It’s late to register, so call 617-336-7500 to make sure they have room and arrange to pay the registration fee.

Wednesday, October 28.  SJC  Presents Pro Bono Awards

SJC Associate Justice and Commission Co-Chair Geraldine S. Hines will present the Annual Adams Pro Bono Publico Awards in the SJC’s Seven Justice Courtroom of the Adams Courthouse in Boston at 4:00 pm

Congratulations to:

Archer B. Battista (Holyoke), Elizabeth I. Ennen (Cambridge), John J. Regan  (Boston) and Shannon Johnson (2015 graduate, BC Law).

The 44 law firms, solo practitioners, in-house corporate counsel offices, government attorney offices, non-profit organizations and law school faculties and 57law students who certified that they met the criteria to be listed on the Court’s Pro Bono Honor Roll.
